Introducing Jordan Maynard: the new chair of the Massachusetts gaming commission

/

Since Cathy Judd-Stein, the previous head of the MGC, retired from public service in March, Maynard has been acting as the interim chair. According to a press release, former Melrose mayor Paul Brodeur was also named as the fifth commissioner of the agency by Governor Maura Healy. Following Judd-Stein's retirement, the MGC was short one commissioner.

"He has proven to be a consensus builder who has a deep understanding of the agency and strives to do what's best for the people of Massachusetts," Healy said via press release quoting the individual.

Maynard served on the MGC from its initial appointment in August 2022 through its rulemaking and 2023 implementation of both online and in-person sports betting. In August 2022, gambling was legalised by the state's general assembly.

Judd-Stein emailed iGB to express her congratulations to Jordan Maynard on being named chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission by Governor Healey. Throughout my time as chair of the commission, I valued Jordan's numerous contributions to our work. The appointment of Mayor Brodeur by the governor today strengthens the MGC's bench, which, along with the outstanding staff, will allow the commission to uphold its integrity-based, consumer-protecting standards of strict but fair regulation of the gaming industry in the Commonwealth.

Maynard, like his predecessor, is very concerned with safeguards for consumers. Along with the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, the state attorney general's office, and other organisations, he is spearheading a new Youth Sports Betting Safety Initiative. Those involved in the project are currently developing a curriculum to inform individuals under the age of 21 about the risks associated with gambling.

Remember when Maynard told iGB, "We have all agreed that this is a problem?" Then. We need to figure out how to deal with this. Curriculum and media presence are two things that we are now attempting to develop in response to requests. Our target audience is young people. We need to figure out a way to get the word out.

Many times this year, Maynard has been honoured.
The effort exemplifies the MGC's position as a frontrunner in the US when it comes to gambling regulation and education. The agency's advertising standards and consumer protections for gambling in casinos and on sports are among the most stringent in the nation. The three brick-and-mortar casinos and seven online gambling sites in the state are all regulated by the MGC. Access to online casinos is not permitted in the Bay State.

In the news release, Maynard expressed his constantly positive impression of the integrity and leadership displayed by his fellow commissioners and personnel at the MGC. "The addition of Mayor Brodeur to the MGC team will undoubtedly have a significant impact."

For Maynard, the safety of brick-and-mortar casinos is crucial. He has collaborated with casino operators to establish standards for the protection of patrons.

In addition to being recognised as one of the top 100 most influential figures in the US gaming industry by Game Masters, Maynard was chosen to the Innovation Group's "40 under 40" class of 2025.

The position of chief secretary to the governor was Maynard's previous position before he joined the commission.

It was Brodeur who pushed for a rise in the minimum wage.
For eight years, from 2011 to 2019, Brodeur was a state representative for Massachusetts before becoming mayor of Melrose. As a member of the state legislature, he was instrumental in the "Grand Bargain" that raised the minimum bet to $15. A universal paid family and medical leave scheme was also something he came up with. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act was also passed under his watch.

According to Healy, "Mayor Paul Brodeur is a trusted leader in our state who has a record of bringing people together to deliver results on our most pressing challenges. He forged the Grand Bargain, which strengthened our economy and supported Massachusetts workers, families and businesses alike," after bringing together elected officials, the business community, labour, and advocates.
