In November, revenue from Detroit casinos was once again affected by strikes.
The three land-based commercial casinos in the city brought in $101.8 million less than a year ago in the same month. Also, compared to October's $82.8m, the November result was a 4.5% decrease for Detroit.
Strikes in Detroit were a backdrop to the downturn. Midway through November, a settlement on wages was finally reached after some employees went on strike on October 17th. For the better part of a month, this meant that the MGM Grand, Greektown, and MotorCity casinos were severely understaffed.
Table games and slot machines contributed $76.0 million to the total income of the three casinos. Compared to the same month in 2023 and 23.9% lower than last year, this was a 7.0% decrease.
Qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) from sports betting accounted for the remaining $3.1 million in revenue. Compared to November 2022, it was 63.2% greater, and for this year, it was 181.8% higher than October.
Players in Detroit wagered a total of $15.3 million on sporting events at local casinos. From $18.1m in November 2022 and October 2023, this was a decrease of 15.5%.
Getting closer to MGM in Detroit.
In November, MGM maintained its position as Detroit's top casino, with 34% of the market. The 46% market share it had in October was, however, eroded.
Table and slot games brought in $30.6 million for MGM, while sports betting brought in $230,847 per quarter.
MotorCity reported a 34% market share, narrowing the gap with MGM. Its table and slot game revenue was $24.7m, while its sports wagering revenue was $2.2m, according to QAGR.
The Hollywood Casino at Greektown rounded out the Detroit marker with a 27% share. In addition to $657,545 in sports betting QAGR, Greektown reported $10.8m in revenue from table and slot games.
When it came time to pay their share of the state's gaming tax in November, the casinos handed over $6.2 million. The city of Detroit received an extra $9.4 million in wagering taxes and payments from the development agreement.
In terms of sports betting, Michigan collected a total of $116,769 in taxes. Furthermore, the city of Detroit received $142,718 in wagering taxes from the three casinos.
